I love seeing ocean aliens! This is salp. Salp is a marine invertebrate that moves by contracting & pumping water through its gelatinous body. It feeds on plankton through its internal feeding filters. When the plankton is plentiful, the salp can clog & sink to the sea floor. This sinking salp carries carbon & nutriets to the sea floor. Small fish can also use salp as a home, protection, or food. Salp do not have a brain or central nervous system. This salp was quickly placed back in the ocean.

Meet the Salp: Nature’s Jet Propelled Ocean Drifter by @andriana_marine Fun Facts: 1. Salps are barrel-shaped planktonic tunicates that drift and swim in ocean currents. 2. Despite their jellyfish-like appearance, salps are actually closer relatives to vertebrates, including humans. 3. Salps play a key role in carbon cycling. They feed on phytoplankton, and their waste sinks quickly, removing carbon from the upper ocean. 4. They have a unique way of moving: salps pump water through their gelatin

Have you ever found a salp on the beach? These are often mistake for jellyfish but don’t worry, these are actually a type of tunicate and cannot sting you! They are super gooey though, so kind of gross to touch or accidentally step on🤣 #salp #beachfinds #beacheducation #beachcombing

@ocean.mysterious on Instagram: "🌊 What Is a Salp? Salps are fascinating marine invertebrates that look like jellyfish but are actually more closely related to vertebrates like us! They move by rhythmically contracting their gelatinous bodies, pumping water through themselves to propel forward 🚀🌊 🥤 Nature’s Filter Feeders Salps feed on microscopic plankton using internal feeding filters. When plankton is abundant, they can become overwhelmed, clog, and sink to the ocean floor — carrying trap
